Train hits dumpster, damages building and ties up traffic in Peabody
By Amanda I. Bergeron, Globe Correspondent
A freight train clipped the corner of a dumpster along the tracks in Peabody and sent the metal bin into a nearby building that housed several businesses, police said.
The mishap tied up traffic downtown and forced the evacuation of a pizza shop, a pub, and some offices, said Peabody police Lieutenant Dennis Bonaiuto.
The westbound Guilford Rail Pan Am train was traveling at about three to four miles-an-hour when it hit the side of the dumpster at about 10 a.m. No one was injured, but the building sustained minor structural damage, Bonaiuto said.
The dumpster is always near the tracks, but it had somehow inched close enough to the rails to be hit by the seven-car freight, Bonaiuto said.
