Elderly man killed in Nantucket fire
By Amanda I. Bergeron, Globe Correspondent
A fire tore through a home on Nantucket early this morning and apparently killed an elderly man.
Fire Chief Mark McDougall said when crews arrived at the single-family home on Hummock Road shortly before 5, the two-story wooden building was engulfed in flames. Initially, firefighters were unable to enter the home because of the heat and intense fire.
"When we arrived, there were three cars parked in the driveway," McDougall said. "Our main concern was to go in."
On the second try, firefighters were able to enter the home and pulled out the man's body. The victim, who has not been identified, was the only person home at the time of the fire, McDougall said. An autopsy will determine how he died.
The blaze is under investigation but is not considered suspicious, McDougall said. Officials suspect the fire started in a first-floor bedroom.
