Hundreds of cheering demonstrators massed on Boston Common today to demand action to stem global warming.

Clutching colorful placards shaped like fish and banging drums, they called on Congress to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. The demonstration was part of a series of protests taking place across the nation.

In Brookline, parents pushed strollers down Harvard Street, to warn that the next generation will suffer if the nation’s political leaders fail to act.

In Boston, Alan Khazei, the cofounder of City Year led the crowd in chants of "Step it up today!" and "Climate change – no way!"

"We can lick this problem if we work together," declared Loie Hayes of the Boston Climate Action Network.
