Guardian Angels to get background checks
By Tracy Jan, Globe Staff
The Guardian Angels will begin conducting criminal background checks next week of the more than 40 Boston volunteers who have recently applied to join the controversial, New York-based citizen policing force.
The group’s founder, Curtis Sliwa, said he’s pushing for the checks after discovering yesterday that one of the group's members had pleaded guilty to a sex offense in 2002.
The member, Erich L. Kennedy, has been asked to leave the Guardian Angels, said Sliwa.
Kennedy, who was an active Guardian Angel in the 1980s and 90s in Boston and who helped jumpstart the group this year, could not be reached on his cell phone today.
