The state's highest court today upheld a jury’s 1997 guilty verdict against a man who was convicted of shooting and killing an honors student at Brighton High School when he was 17.

Anthony Robinson is serving life in prison for the shooting of another 17-year-old, Barrington Nevins, in the chest after stealing his leather jacket on Browning Street in Dorchester.

A defense attorney argued before the Supreme Judicial Court that the trial judge improperly excluded expert testimony, erred when responding to a question from the jury, and wrongly dismissed a juror who had not returned to court.

In a five-page decision written by Justice Judith A. Cowin, the SJC ruled that the trial judge acted properly and rejected the claims of the defense.
