Nineteen students from Jackson-Mann Elementary School were taken to hospitals with minor neck and back injuries today when a yellow school bus was rear-ended by another bus as the children were being driven home, according to police and witnesses. Both bus drivers and an adult school bus monitor were also taken to hospitals with minor injuries after the accident in Brighton, where traffic was tied up for miles.

The accident occurred at 1:45 on Brighton Avenue when a pickup truck braked suddenly, forcing one of the buses stop quickly, police said. The second bus rear-ended the first bus, causing many of the occupants to lurch forward and hit their heads on the seats in front of them.

The students were in first through sixth grade. The hood of the second bus crumpled in the collision.

The students not taken to hospitals were brought to a nearby Brazilian barbecue restaurant and given water and snacks. They had access to phones and were able to call their parents, many of whom came to get their children.
