Firefighters saved two people from the roof of a burning house during a two-alarm fire this morning on Merrymount Avenue in the Wollaston section of Quincy.
Fire Lieutenant Mike Granahan said the fire was first reported at 5:45 a.m. He said no one was injured in the blaze.
Tuan Lam, 27, was one of those saved from the roof by firefighters using a ladder truck.
"We climbed through the windows. That's the only thing that saved us," he said.
Charles Hattenburg, a taxi driver with Yellow Cab of Quincy, said he was returning from a run to Logan International Airport early this morning when he saw black smoke coming from the house.
Hattenburg said he called 911 as he banged on the door, yelling for occupants to wake up.
"I knew there were people sleeping inside so I did what anyone would do. I tried to help them," he said.
Hattenburg said occupants on the first floor and some on the second floor also got out, but two people had to be rescued from the roof by firefighters.
