Brookline takes small step toward taxing SUVs
Members of Town Meeting in Brookline Wednesday night voted to advise town selectmen to establish a committee to craft a bill to send to the State Legislature that would promote fuel efficiency.
Members backed off a proposal that could have increased excise taxes on the owners of sport utility vehicles in Brookline, a proposal that had prompted controversy throughout the town.
Town meeting voted 173-27 to advise selectman to propose legislation that would penalize the owners of fuel-inefficient vehicles. Town Meeting is a legislative body that consists of 240 elected residents, members of the Board of Selectmen, and any state representative or senator who resides in Brookline.
Town meeting resumes Thursday evening, when a proposal to ban trans fats from restaurants is scheduled to be considered.
