Gravel truck splashes into the Fore River
By Dan Muse, Globe Correspondent
A gravel truck backing on to a barge splashed into the Fore River this morning when a ramp collapsed, police said.
The driver of the truck was able to free himself from the cab and no one was seriously injured, said Captain John Dougan of the Quincy police.
A spokesman for Cashman Construction, the owner of the property, said the truck was loading gravel onto a barge near the former Quincy Shipyard at 11 a.m. for a project on Long Island. “We are just happy the man driving this truck was not seriously injured,” Norm Bourque, project manager for Cashman Construction said in a statement.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident, according to John Chavez, an agency spokesman. The probe may take several weeks.
The accident appears to have had little impact on the environment and did not cause significant contamination of the water, said Petty Officer Luke Pinneo of Coast Guard, which also responded to the scene. The state Department of Environmental Protection is also assessing the environmental impact of the spill.
