Hundreds join mothers' walk for peace in Dorchester
By April Simpson
Hundreds of mothers and other family members of victims of violent crime joined in the 11th Annual Walk for Peace this morning in Dorchester, in what organizers called a record turnout for the fundraiser.
The 3.6-mile walk began and ended in Town Field Park in Fields Corner, with numerous walkers wearing T-shirts with photographs of victims of street violence in Boston and other communities. The event, created to support families across the state who have lost loved ones to violence, raised $33,000, organizers said.
Family of some of the recent victims of homicides in the city brought dozens of supportive relatives and friends.
“I want justice,” said Rayza Jiminian, 26, whose nephew, 13-year-old Luis Gerena, was shot to death in Jamaica Plain in January,. “I want peace. I want this over with. There are too many young people dying.”
