Malden looks to Boston for new superintendent
By John Laidler, Globe Correspondent, and Kathy McCabe, Globe Staff
Malden has tapped Sidney Smith to be the city’s next superintendent of schools.
The school committee voted 8-1 Monday night in favor of Smith, who has served 12 years as director of curriculum and instructional practices for Boston Public Schools.
"This is a gentleman who focuses on teaching and learning," said Leonard Iovino, a school committee member.
Smith will succeed Joan Connolly, who is retiring. The appointment is contingent on contract negotiations.
Malden's superintendent search drew 14 candidates. The school committee narrowed the list to Smith and another finalist, Katherine Darlington, the school superintendent in Pittsfield.
School committee members said they chose Smith because of his candor and commitment to urban education.
