Parked school bus rolls off hill in Haverhill
By Amanda Bergeron, Globe Correspondent
A parked school bus with one child aboard rolled off an embankment in Haverhill today and crashed through the roof of a garage.
It was "miraculous" that the child or anyone else wasn't hurt in the 9 a.m. accident near Arch Street, said officer Robert Pistone of the Haverhill Police Department.
"It pretty much pancaked the garage," Pistone said of the bus. "It was almost vertical, the front end was through the roof and the back end was sticking out."
The driver of the vehicle, owned by Coppola Bus Company, had parked on Arch Street after dropping off children. The driver told investigators she got out of the bus to put chocks under the wheels when the vehicle rolled off the embankment, Pistone said. Police did not release the driver’s name.
State Police accident reconstruction specialists are trying to determine what happened, which is standard when a school bus is involved in an accident, Pistone said.
