Salem State College named Patricia Maguire Meservey, provost and academic vice president at Suffolk University in Boston, as its 13th president this afternoon.
The college's board of trustees picked Merservey during a special meeting. She is expected to assume her position by mid-summer, after the state Board of Higher Education approves her appointment.
At Suffolk, Meservey focused on improving teaching, promotion of faculty scholarship, and academic and administrative strategic planning. She has several Massachusetts ties, and came to Suffolk from Northeastern, where she was vice provost for faculty and budget and held several other positions, including nursing professor.
She has a doctorate in higher education administration from Boston College, a master's degree in parent-child health nursing and a bachelor's in nursing from Boston University and a diploma in nursing from Faulkner Hospital.
