Soldier from Walpole killed in Iraq
By Globe Staff
The son of a Boston University professor who has become a vocal critic of the war was killed Sunday while his Army unit was on combat patrol in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced this afternoon.
First Lieutenant Andrew J. Bacevich was the son of Professor Andrew J. Bacevich Jr., a West Point graduate and retired Army lieutenant colonel.
The younger Bacevich was killed Sunday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit in the Salahuddin Province. The 1998 BU graduate lived in Walpole and fought with the third battalion, eighth Cavalry Regiment, Third Brigade Combat Team, First Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas.
Professor Bacevich declined to comment today. He wrote in an opinion article in the Globe in March that "our reckless flirtation with preventive war qualifies as not only wrong, but also stupid. Indeed, the Bush Doctrine poses a greater danger to the United States than do the perils it supposedly guards against."
"We urgently need to abrogate that doctrine in favor of principles that reflect our true interests and our professed moral values," Bacevich added.
