Teen charged with manslaughter, tells police he was 'playing around' with handgun

A Jamaica Plain teenager told authorities that he and a friend were "playing around" with a handgun in his bedroom when it shot the 17-year-old in the face and killed him, according to a release today from the Suffolk district attorney.
Enrique Baez, 18, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and other charges today in Suffolk Superior Court and was ordered held $15,000 bail. He is accused of "wanton and reckless conduct" that contributed to the death of Cheyenne Baez on April 8.
Baez initially told investigators that his friend has been shot in Hyde Park and taken to his home in Jamaica Plain before the called police. Under questioning, Baez old police, “we were playing around with it and it went off,” according to the district attorney.
Baez also pleaded not guilty to two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, two counts of possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a Class D substance for marijuana that police said was discovered in his room after the shooting. He is scheduled to return to court June 21.
