New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang and representatives of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian tribe of Cape Cod were scheduled to meet this afternoon at New Bedford City Hall to discuss possibly opening a casino in that southeastern Massachusetts city.

The Wampanoag tribe this year gained federal recognition as a tribe to make a casino a possibility. Tribal leaders are actively searching for a site for a casino, which they plan to model on Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, Indian-run casinos in Connecticut.

The tribe last month took control of about 350 acres of land in Middleborough, about 40 miles southeast of Boston. Tribal leaders say they continue to consider other options for building a casino while negotiations in Middleborough go forward.

Under federal law, the tribe must build within a 50-mile radius of their tribal homelands in Mashpee.
