At Simmons College, $1.5 million endowment will encourage female politicians
By Globe Staff
Up to 20 students at Simmons College each year will serve as interns for female lawmakers with the help of a new $1.5 million endowment designed to encourage more women to go into politics.
The endowment, a gift from the Barbara Lee Family Foundation, will also fund a speaker series on women in American politics. The award was announced today by Simmons, a women’s college in Boston with about 1,900 undergraduate. The money will help provide stipends for the internships.
"Working side-by-side with women who are successful in government and politics helps students become deeply invested in the political process and gain both the confidence and the know-how to run for office," Barbara Lee, a 1967 Simmons graduate, said in a statement.
