With a brown briefcase and a baseball hat pulled tight over his head, disgraced former Providence mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci Jr. left his Back Bay halfway house for the last time this morning and moved back to Rhode Island.

Cianci, 66, was released to home confinement at 7 a.m. after a three-week stay at the Coolidge House, according to a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. At 7:05 a.m., a dark-colored car double parked in front of the halfway house on Huntington Avenue, and a man got out and entered the Coolidge House.

Moments later, Cianci came out of the lobby in a blue blazer and tan pants. The man followed. Both got in the dark-colored car and Cianci was whisked away without saying a word.

The former mayor was convicted on a charge of racketeering conspiracy in federal corruption probe called Operation Plunderdome. On May 30, he was released after more than four years in federal prison.

Cianci started working earlier this month as an assistant project manager at a high-end Providence condominium complex after abandoning his once-scheduled job at Boston's XV Beacon hotel. When he isn't working, Cianci will remain on home confinement until July 28.
