Coast Guard rescues 7 from sport fishing boat
By Globe Staff
Seven people who were aboard a sport fishing boat off Cape Cod are safe and dry today thanks to the Coast Guard, which rescued the group Tuesday when their vessel broke down in rough water 10 miles out at sea.
The passengers of the 34-foot Dear Abbie were able to get a message to the Coast Guard via cellphone at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, the Coast Guard said in a statement. The boat had lost electrical power and was adrift about 10 miles southeast of Monomoy Island.
Without power, the boat floated farther out to sea in 4- to 6-foot waves and drifted out of cellphone range, leaving the seven passengers without a way to communicate.
The Coast Guard dispatched a 32-foot boat and a helicopter, which located the fishing charter at 1:30 p.m. The Dear Abbie was towed back to shore, arriving at its home port of Chatham at 7:45 p.m.
