Frank to endorse Tsongas in 5th district

Democrat Niki Tsongas secured her second influential supporter today in her campaign to succeed Representative Martin T. Meehan in the fifth congressional district.

US Representative Barney Frank, a Newton Democrat, is expected to endorse Tsongas this morning at a senior center in Concord, according to a statement issued by her campaign.

Tsongas, the wife of the late US senator Paul Tsongas, already has the support of Meehan’s wife, Ellen Murphy Meehan, who is chairwoman of her campaign.

Meehan, a Democrat who is leaving Congress in July to become chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, has vowed to stay neutral in the race to succeed him. A primary is scheduled for Sept. 4.
