The teenage half brother of an 8-year-old who was shot in his Roxbury apartment by a cousin was taken into custody this morning by the state Department of Youth Services and Boston Police, officials said.

Jayquan McConnico, 15, was arrested for a probation violation that surfaced during the investigation into the fatal shooting Sunday night of Liquarry Jefferson, police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said. She would not say whether the probation violation was directly connected to the shooting. DYS officials did not return calls seeking comment.

Liquarry's grandmother told the Globe on Tuesday that the boy was accidentally shot by his 7-year-old cousin Anthony Jackson in McConnico's bedroom. A police official told the Globe that McConnico told detectives he handled the gun after the shooting. The illegal 9mm semiautomatic handgun was found hidden in a stairwell of the apartment building.
