A teenager was shot several times on an Orange Line train this afternoon as passengers were disembarking at Ruggles Station, transit police said.

The teenager, who was described as an 18 to 19-year-old male, was rushed into surgery at Boston Medical Center, where he is expected to survive, said Deputy Chief John Martino of the MBTA transit police.

Witnesses told investigators that two teenagers stood up at about 1 p.m. when the outbound train pulled into the station. One of the teens pulled a gun and fired several times at the victim, who was still on the train, witnesses told police.

"The act was very deliberate," Martino said this afternoon at a press conference. "We believe the suspects and the victim knew each other."

Transit police shutdown the subway line and herded the passengers into an air-conditioned bus so they could be questioned. Each passenger was frisked by police before they were allowed to leave.

Police have not made any arrests or recovered a gun, Martino said. The Ruggles bus depot was closed for about 45 minutes while police investigated. The Orange Line station at Ruggles remains closed. Passengers are being bused between Jackson Square and Back Bay station.
