A 33-year-old Wilmington man was arrested this morning after allegedly attacking his girlfriend, then holding police at bay for several hours.

Robert M. Palazzi is charged with assault and battery and intimidation of a witness. The episode began when authorities received a 911 call from Palazzi's girlfriend, who said he woke her up, questioned her about the collapse of their relationship, and then threw her against a bureau. After threatening to shoot himself in front of her, Palazzi smashed the phone when she tried to call police and fled the house, police said.

Authorities then went to Palazzi's home on Chase Road, which they surrounded. When he refused to come out, a crisis negotiator was called to the scene about 3.30 a.m. After more than an hour, Palazzi came outside at 5 a.m. and surrendered without incident.

He is to be arraigned today in Woburn District Court. Police said there was no record of any domestic incidents between Palazzi and the girlfriend.
