Three homes in Bedford were burglarized early today and a thief left behind some stolen goods when he was chased by a homeowner, police said.

Police responded to a 911 call at 3:56 a.m. for a report of an intruder inside a home on North Road, said Lieutenant Scott Jones. The homeowner had seen a flashlight shining in the home.

Police quickly discovered that two other houses in the 300 block of North Road had been burglarized, Jones said. State Police sent a canine unit and searched the area but did not find any suspects.

Near one of the burglarized homes, a resident discovered a backpack in some bushes. The backpack contained some wallets and a camera and that appeared to have been stolen from one the other homes.

"We're very concerned," Jones said.

Police are searching for forensic evidence and urged residents to take security precautions inside their homes.
