Mac Daniel, the Boston Globe's transportation reporter who writes the quirky Starts & Stops blog chronicling the complaints of commuters, has been appointed director of communications for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority.

Daniel has covered the Turnpike Authority for the newspaper for the last five years. "Mac brings a strong understanding of the Turnpike and transportation issues in general to the table, and will be a significant asset to our team," said Bernard Cohen, the Turnpike Authority chairman and state transportation secretary, in a statement announcing the appointment.

He will replace Jon Carlisle, who was tapped as communications director during former governor Mitt Romney’s administration. Daniel, who started at the Globe in 1997, declined to comment because he said was on deadline for Tuesday’s paper.

Before joining the Globe, Daniel wrote for The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Bozeman Daily Chronicle in Montana.
