A pregnant woman was in critical condition this morning after a shooting overnight in Fitchburg that also left a man hospitalized with a bullet wound in his shoulder, police said.

The victims, Elizabeth Crete and Melvin Cabrera, both 21, were shot at 10 p.m. while investigating a car alarm in the parking lot of their apartment complex on Prichard Street, police said. Crete suffered injuries to her upper chest and forearm. Cabrera was shot in the left shoulder.

"There are no suspects and no motives," said Captain Charles M. Tasca of the Fitchburg Police Department. "It is believed that this was not random or gang related."

A .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun was found at the scene as well as a single .45-caliber shell casing. Authorities are testing the weapon to determine whether it had been fired.

Tasca said police today also recovered eight 9mm bullet casings near the site of the shooting, raising suspicions that Crete and Cabrera were lured outside their apartment by their car alarm and then ambushed.
