A Suffolk Superior Court jury today acquitted a 47-year-old Roxbury man in the 1991 stabbing deaths of his girlfriend and her companion.

Prosecutors alleged that Reggie Knight killed 24-year-old Michelle Paul and 50-year-old Henry Cowart outside a Mission Hill housing development when he encountered them as they returned from buying cigarettes.

It was the latest defeat this year for Suffolk prosecutors, and followed a cold-case investigation that led to Knight's indictment in 2003.

"Although this is not the desired result, we respect the jury's verdict in this very difficult case," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a statement. "It was especially complex due to the age of the case. Prosecutors from our office together with the Boston Police detectives who investigated this case worked tirelessly to achieve justice for the victims and their families, and I praise them for their dedication and hard work."
