A Lowell man became the sixth defendant to admit his role in an insurance fraud ring when he pleaded guilty Thursday to staging a car accident and filing false insurance claims.

Sithorn Tith, 30, pleaded guilty in Cambridge Superior Court to two counts of fraud, two counts of larceny over $250, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and four counts of conspiracy.

Tith and the other defendants were accused of staging an accident May 24, 2004, in Lowell. According to prosecutors, Tith was operating a Lexus with three passengers when he was purposefully hit by a Honda Civic driven by another man in the insurance fraud ring. Tith then rammed his car into a telephone pole. All the passengers in the Lexis filed medical insurance claims and were paid $38,000, prosecutors said.

Tith is scheduled to return to court July 30 for sentencing.
