Police arrested four men at Boston Medical Center early this morning who had come to the hospital to check on the victims of a fatal shooting a few hours earlier that occurred near a rowdy outdoor concert and barbecue at the Franklin Hill public housing complex in Dorchester.

Two men were killed in the shooting a half-block from the party, where neighbors say that as many as 200 people spent much of Thursday drinking while amateur rappers performed on a makeshift stage.

Police this afternoon identified the victims as Jeffery Jones, 42, of Mattapan, and Jarrid Campbell, 27, of Roxbury. They were rushed to Boston Medical Center, where a crowd followed.

Officers responded to the hospital at 1:45 a.m. because of the size of the crowd. When four men got into a gray car and sped away, police followed. The four men who fled were "known to be closely associated with the shooting victims," and officers pulled over their car when the driver blew a red light, according to a press release from Boston police.

Police said they searched the car and found a loaded, semiautomatic gun and a large amount of crack cocaine. The four men -- Melvin McGregor, 36, of Dorchester: Antonio Duncan, 31, of Mattapan; Antwan Green, 31, of Dorchester; and, Dominique Jean-Pierre, 28, of Hyde Park -- were charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and the trafficking of a class B drug.

Police have not reported making any arrests in connection with the deaths of Jones and Campbell.

A woman at the barbecue said she heard 10 gunshots near a small white car parked a half-block away on Fermoy Heights Avenue. The woman, who declined to give her name, said she ran to the car and saw her best friend's son and another man slumped over.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooting and the party were connected. This morning, the makeshift stage stood on a basketball court, where orange and blue balloons were tied to a black fence. The ground was littered with clear plastic cups and bottles of Hennessy cognac, champagne, and Heineken, as if partygoers had dropped their drinks in the middle of a performance and run.

Neighbors said that the barbecue kicked off at 2 p.m. and that there was a sound system for performers at the mostly male party. Groups of amateur rappers climbed onto the 2-foot high stage and took turns on a microphone. When the sun when down, the partygoers drove four cars onto the grounds and turned on the headlights to illuminate the stage.

Officers responded to a call about gunfire at 11:18 p.m.
