A dog died early this morning when a two-alarm fire tore through an otherwise vacant home in Lynn, a fire official said.
The family had moved out of the house on Murray Street, but they were keeping their dog there, which may have been a pitbull, said Chief Edward Higgins of the Lynn Fire Department. The two-story, single-family home caught fire at about 5 a.m.
"The whole front of the building was engulfed when we got there," Higgins said.
The flames spread to the home next door, melting the vinyl siding and igniting the asphalt shingles underneath. "We knocked that down really quickly" and minimized the damage to the other home, Higgins said. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
