Anticipation builds for tonight's big game for Walpole Little Leaguers
By Javier Hernandez, Globe Correspondent
Fans hoping to watch Walpole smash its way to victory in the Little League World Series are praying for a break in the clouds.
Rain in South Williamsport, Pa., canceled all five games in the series yesterday, postponing Walpole's do-or-die contest against Warner Robins, Ga., until 6 p.m. today.
The town's recreation department is sponsoring a viewing party tonight with big-screen televisions and projectors at Blackburn Hall on Stone Street.
Jacqui Nardelli, a program aide at Walpole's recreation department, said fans were disappointed yesterday but the excitement is growing again today.
"Everybody just wants to get the game going and see how their team does," she said. "We figure the time we let them sit and rest will give them more energy to play strong."
Snacks and food from local restaurants will be on sale, and children will be able to make signs celebrating the team's success. Donations will be accepted, and fans can also buy Walpole Little League hats for $20.
In its opening game last week, Walpole center fielder Michael Rando made national headlines when he reached over the fence and made a catch that stopped a sure home run and secured a 3-2 victory.
Walpole's winning streak ended Sunday when it lost 1-0 to Lake Oswego, Ore.
