A 42-year-old Dennis man is facing a charge of motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation in the death yesterday of a 77-year-old University of Connecticut professor, Dennis police said this afternoon.
Todd E. Jenkins has been charged in the death of Albert Alissi of Weatogue, Conn. early yesterday morning, police said in a statement.
Alissi had had been out for an early morning walk and was believed to be returning to his summer home when he was struck from behind by Jenkins's car at the intersection of Trotting Park and Lower County Roads, police said in a statement.
Jenkins's car then struck a hydrant and utility pole. The hydrant burst and a large sinkhole formed around the car.
Jenkins will be summoned to appear in Orleans District Court at a future date. The charge carries a possible sentence of up to two and one-half years in jail and a fine of up to $3,000.
There was no listing for Jenkins in the Dennis telephone directory.
Alissi, a professor emeritus at the university, was considered a social work pioneer, the Globe reported this morning.
