A young woman walking on a downtown street this morning was injured when a trowel fell from the scaffolding on a building, slashing her on the head and nose.

Officer James Kenneally, a Boston Police spokesman, said the incident happened at about 8:45 a.m. at Milk and Congress streets in the Financial District.

The woman was taken to New England Medical Center for treatment. Kenneally said her injuries weren't life-threatening.

Paul Stevens, 32, of Norwell, an accountant who works downtown, said he saw the woman shortly after the incident. She appeared "dazed and confused," with blood dripping down her face, he said. He said the trowel was lying nearby.

Kenneally said the city Inspectional Services Department and the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration were notified.

John Chavez, a spokesman for OSHA, said the agency was investigating the incident.
