A 32-year-old Scituate man allegedly led State Police on a high-speed chase early this morning through two South Shore towns before crashing his 2007 BMW into a telephone pole and running off into the woods, where he was arrested, authorities said.

William Tibbetts was allegedly speeding southbound Route 3 at about 12:30 a.m. when he drove past Trooper Mark Concannon, who was parked in his cruiser. With his emergency lights on and his siren sounding, Concannon tried to pull Tibbetts over, but he sped off and exited onto Route 18 southbound in Weymouth, State Police said.

Continuing to flee at high speeds, Tibbetts turned onto Route 58 southbound and smashed into a fence and telephone pole, State Police said. Tibbetts allegedly jumped out of the car and ran into nearby woods. As investigators searched with dogs, a resident called Abington police to say that Tibbetts was in a backyard. He was arrested behind a home near the intersections of Washington and Adams streets, State Police said.

Tibbetts is scheduled to be arraigned today in Quincy District Court on numerous charges, including speeding, resisting arrest, failure to stop for a police officer, and leaving the scene of an accident after causing property damage.
