Governor Deval Patrick has appointed S. Paul Reville, one of the leaders of the state's education reform efforts in the 1990s, as chairman of the state Board of Education.
Reville, who served as a member of the education board from 1991 to 1996, is the president of the Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy in Cambridge. He is also director of the education policy and management program and a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Patrick described Reville as "a leader with a broad perspective on local, national and international education issues and solutions."
Reville will replace Christopher R. Anderson, who Patrick called a "strong and effective advocate."
Anderson said earlier today he will remain on the board, meaning some other member of the nine-person panel will have to be removed.
Patrick's move follows last week's announcement that Fred W. Clark, a former head of the Massachusetts State College Council of Presidents, will chair the state Board of Higher Education. Earlier this month, Patrick appointed an 18-member task force to flesh out the details of his education plans, which include free community college for Massachusetts residents, longer school days, and new teacher training programs.
Patrick yesterday also completed a restructuring of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board that effectively left him in control of the five-member panel.
