The small western Massachusetts city of Northampton will get a boost with a mention in one of the National Geographic family of magazines this September.
National Geographic Adventure has picked Northampton as a "top adventure town."
In the September issue, one of the contributing editors will lay out his picks for adventure towns across the country, choosing places where it’s good to both live and play, said magazine publicist Ethan Fried. One adventure town was picked for each state.
"Earnest Northampton combines the cultural breadth of a major metropolis ... with the low-key sensibility of a small borough," the magazine writes in its Northampton blurb. Fried said Northampton was mentioned in the writeup but isn't featured in any pictures.
The blurb also mentions laid-back paddling on the Connecticut River, the Class 4 rapids on the Deerfield, and cycling opportunities on country roads and in DAR State Forest.
