Arlington police say that a three-year-old pit bull has been euthanized after severely injuring a woman in an attack last weekend.

The victim, a 32-year-old Arlington resident, is still recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital from Sunday's attack, which resulted in serious injuries to her arm, wrist, and hand, Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said.

The dog's owner was also injured in the attack. He has been released from the hospital.

"This was an unprovoked and vicious attack that was further complicated by the fact that there is no record of the dog having received the necessary vaccinations," Ryan said.

Ryan said police were investigating the incident to determine "what, if any, animal control laws were violated."

The dog was euthanized today, with the consent of the owner. Its remains will be sent to the state Department of Public Health for rabies testing, police said.
