Caution: Sumner Tunnel closures ahead
By Globe Staff
The Sumner Tunnel will close late at night five days a week for the rest of the summer, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority said today.
The tunnel, which was built in the 1930s and carries traffic from East Boston into the city's downtown, will be closed from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night from Sunday to Thursday, beginning this Sunday.
Highway officials said the tunnel needed to be closed because of ceiling repair work.
Motorists who need to get from East Boston, where Logan International Airport is located, into the downtown area, can use the Ted Williams Tunnel instead.
Traffic will be restricted to one lane every night at 9:30 p.m. just before the full closures, and a single lane may sometimes have to be closed during the day, the Turnpike Authority said.
The closures are expected to extend into September, but a Turnpike spokeswoman didn't have a definite date when work would be finished.
