A water main broke in the Theater District this afternoon and closed a block of Stuart Street to traffic, according to a spokesman for the Boston Water and Sewer Department.

"Hopefully we'll have it restored for tomorrow's commute," said Thomas Bagley, a spokesman for the Boston Water and Sewer Commission. "We will be working through the night."

When the 16-inch main broke, it damaged Stuart Street between Tremont and Charles streets. No one was injured and no nearby buildings were damaged, Bagley said.

The cause of the break is under investigation, Bagley said.
