Amesbury voters reject tax cut

By a 2-1 margin, voters in Amesbury on Tuesday rejected a proposed $1 million Proposition 2 1/2 ‘‘underride,’’ or tax cut, that had been strongly opposed by Amesbury Mayor Thatcher W. Kezer III.

Kezer said voters rejecting the underride ‘‘agreed we need the tools and flexibility to deliver municipal services, that there are other ways to control taxes that are a lot smarter, a lot more effective, and a lot more sustainable than just a wholesale cut in revenues.’’

Kezer rolled to a second term in last Tuesday’s city election, picking up 79 percent of the vote in defeating his challenger, District 6 Councilor Alison M. Lindstrom. He is gearing for a second term that he said will be focused on further bolstering the city’s financial management.

‘‘My effort has been to transform the way we do business as a municipal government,’’ he said, ‘‘and to make Amesbury the shining example of how municipal government should be run in Massachusetts.’’
