A solid choice for state Senate
VOTERS in the 1st Suffolk and Middlesex Senate district lost a powerful protector in March when Senate President Robert Travaglini left for the private sector. State Representative Anthony Petruccelli of East Boston offers the experienced leadership now needed in this challenging district. The Globe endorses Petruccelli's Senate bid in Tuesday's special election to replace Travaglini. Petruccelli's positions are closely tuned to the district, which covers East Boston, most of Revere, the North End, West End, part of Beacon Hill, and a portion of Cambridge. As would be expected of any self-respecting East Boston candidate, Petruccelli, 34, has held the Massachusetts Port Authority accountable for air quality improvements around Logan Airport and has fought to expand greenspace in the congested neighborhood. Liberal voters in the district should be impressed by his strong pro-choice stand and his opposition to an ill-conceived constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage. In Revere and Winthrop, voters should take special notice of Petruccelli's efforts to beautify the beaches, ensure adequate maintenance, and enhance the public's access to the waterfront. Elderly voters should also see an ally in the fight for affordable prescription drugs and home healthcare coverage. Petruccelli's opponent, Revere City Councilor Dan Rizzo, enjoys a reputation for sound fiscal management and basic city services. He and Petruccelli agree on many major issues. But Petruccelli's unequivocal support for charter schools shows a deeper understanding of education reform. The wider district would also benefit from a senator with solid experience on Beacon Hill. And Petruccelli has shown over nearly eight years in the House that he can deliver for his constituents and still retain his independence. His support for closing tax loopholes on businesses and allowing cities and towns to raise revenue by imposing a small surcharge on restaurant meals, despite the opposition of House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, are two such examples. Petruccelli is the right choice to extend the district's tradition of principled and practiced leadership. .content> ![]()
