Use these islands
Scientists are now studying the effects of ferry boat wakes on the topographic features of the Boston Harbor Islands. The goal of the National Park Service next summer should be to keep those researchers busy -- by making it easier for more visitors to experience the superb recreational opportunities in the 34-island national recreation area. An island home
Peddocks Island is not the easiest to reach of the 34 Boston Harbor islands, but it may have the most potential. With 210 acres crisscrossed by paved paths and wooded trails, it's an island to get lost in, to swim and read and wander. ()

Hub of the harbor
Georges Island isn't the largest in Boston Harbor, nor is it the closest to the city. With 80,000 visitors a year, though, the 39-acre Georges is the most visited outpost of the Boston Harbor Islands park. (8/5/06)

Closer to Outer Brewster
"Hardcore Islands" is the apt term used by Alan Mikal in his 1973 guidebook ``Exploring Boston Harbor" to describe the windswept, surf-hammered cluster of four Brewster Islands at the easternmost reach of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. (7/29/06)

Off-limits island
Long Island, the largest of the 34 islands in Boston Harbor, is the isle of naught. There are no public docks, no moorings, no campsites, no picnic areas, no swimming beaches, no public toilets, and no visitors' season. (7/15/06)

Spectacular spectacle
Of Boston's 34 harbor islands, Spectacle is the United Nations. Spectacle is unique among the islands in being nurtured by so many groups, but this has turned out to be a curse as well as a blessing. (6/17/06)

Harboring recreation
The 1983 guidebook ``All About the Boston Harbor Islands" describes Deer Island, then the site of a dilapidated jail and smelly sewage plant, as ``not exactly a typical pleasant Sunday excursion." A lot has changed in the intervening years. (6/3/06)
