We must challenge lies, half-truths

E.J. DIONNE Jr. has it half right ("The new radicals on foreign policy," op ed. Nov. 11). George W. Bush and his military department masters are radical reactionaries and incompetent imperialists. But they are not democratic.

Look at where the current leaders of Afghanistan and Iraq came from and who chose them. Look at the effort to oust the democratically elected president of Venezuela because he wanted a higher share of oil revenues to benefit his people. This is not new, just more open and blatant.

Look at the US role in overthrowing the democratically elected governments of Iran 50 years ago and Chile 30 years ago. What Bush & Co. really mean by democracy is a government under the control of the United States, or at least always following our lead and opening its resources and markets to profiteering by giant US corporations.

They use the word democracy not because they understand it or want it, but because it is a powerful positive word. To save our own democracy, we must challenge their lies and half truths at every opportunity.
