Mercury in Lynn

THANK YOU for the editorial "Mercury rising" (Feb. 17). I am the mother of two and I live near a power plant. As chair of the Headstart Policy Council, I know that the parents of young children in my community are outraged by the Bush administration's proposal to allow off-site mercury reductions as an alternative to on-site reductions.

One out of six women of childbearing age has unsafe levels of mercury in her blood. The Bush administration's proposal would affect all of us living around the power plants. We should not be exposed to high levels of mercury for longer than necessary.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection needs to address this problem immediately by finalizing the strong mercury emissions standards it proposed last fall.
