Overseas voting really counts

THANKS TO Brian Whitmore for calling attention to the importance of the overseas vote (Page A1, May 3). While we welcome the new focus on this topic, we want to add that Republicans Abroad has been spearheading overseas voter registration for the past 20 years. The overseas vote was a deciding factor in the election of Connie Mack of Florida to the US Senate. The overseas vote has swung a number of House seats as well, including seats in the last two elections.

Republicans Abroad is conducting voter registration programs in Europe, Latin America, and Asia in joint registration events with Democrats Abroad. We have found that the majority register Republican. Focusing on the Internet and e-mail along with traditional voter registration events and advertising is hardly "low key." On the contrary, a 70 percent increase for voter assistance indicates that we must be doing something right.
