Send convention out to sea

ONLY DAYS to go before the Democratic National Convention here in Boston, and as the owner of a small business, I'm not looking forward to it. Those of us not in hostelry, construction, or arranging fake shrubbery have pretty dim prospects for the upcoming week.

For most Boston businesses, I'm afraid the DNC represents nothing more than an unfunded mandate: We pay enormous taxes for services and civil liberties that will be denied to us without our asking and without compensation. However, there's still hope.

I propose that the DNC (and the RNC for that matter) simply rent a cruise ship (the QE2 would do) and have the entire convention out at sea. The Navy could easily handle security, and access is certainly more easily controlled.

Conventioneers could party all they wanted and not inconvenience the rest of us a bit.
