SHIFTY-EYED and hunkered down in his seat, his uncharitable record of voting against Head Start, Meals on Wheels, and a holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. thrust into public view, Dick Cheney resembled no one so much as curmudgeonly Old Man Potter -- with bright-eyed, idealistic John Edwards confronting him as a latter-day George Bailey.
