Rehashing election hurts Democrats

SENATOR JOHN Kerry once again demonstrates why he was rejected by the voters of the country in the presidential election. His remarks at the Martin Luther King Day memorial breakfast were outrageous and divisive, although he was speaking to an audience of the party faithful ("Kerry alleges voters were suppressed," Page A1, Jan. 18).

The Rev. Martin Luther King was a great man who deserves to be honored, but Kerry was quite wrong in using the celebration for another political speech. Ditto for the lady from Harvard, Lani Guinier, who used the occasion to demean the president.

Senator Kerry and the Democratic Party need to address the reasons why they lost, debate those issues, and strengthen the party. Rehashing old and tired rhetoric only hurts the Democrats. Get on with life. There is much to be done.
