Race issues? Please let's talk

THANKS TO Don Aucoin for ''The discomfort zone," Living/Arts, June 22), kicking off an occasional series about the experiences of blacks and Latinos in Greater Boston. We need to expand the conversation about race and discrimination in this city, and articles like this definitely help.

I know that there are many folks of good will who are eager to sit down with each other. Despite their anxieties over the emotional difficulty of the topic and our horrific history, they want to come together. They want to be heard, and they want to hear and come up with win-win solutions.

In order for us to do this, we need to continue this conversation. It will take a while, unfortunately, but we have no other choice.

In my experience, some of the most authentic and real conversations on this topic have been in the Northeast. Yes, Bostonians are sensitive about the ''racist" label, but they are also willing to come to the table to discuss it. In fact, every day more people are sitting down at that table.

I was also glad to see that the article dealt with class issues as well. We often miss this crucial link and its intersection with race.
