War in Iraq? No, my sons won't go
LAST WEEK we joined thousands of Americans across the nation in support of the protest of Cindy Sheehan, the mother who wants President Bush to tell her what her son died for in Iraq. We want to know, too.
We are the parents of two teenaged sons entering junior year in high school. We will not send them to die for what we believe is an unnecessary and unjust war about which our government has lied to us.
Many Americans are against this war, and the military is not meeting its quotas for new recruits. President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act requires public high schools to make high school juniors' personal information available to military recruiters. Although schools are supposed to inform parents of this requirement and offer them an opportunity to prohibit the dissemination of this information, many do not.
We encourage parents to do what we did and send a letter to the principal of your school, requesting that no personal information (name, address, etc.) about your children be released to military recruiters or military colleges.
